5J Class Assembly

This Friday, students and parents gathered into the hall to witness 5J’s first ever class assembly. Once children and parents had finished piling into the room, the assembly began.

Firstly, they introduced themselves and explained that if there were any explosions, fires, tropical floods or unexplained alien attacks, then to leave the doors by the fire exits in an orderly fashion. This (of course) made everyone chuckle.

After that, they introduced the ‘Science Live!’ show that was presented by the one and only ‘Brian Cox’. He introduced us to his fellow scientists who were going to conduct an experiment where they were going to make a ‘Frankenstein Hand’.

On a table, they had three liquids inside three cups : juice, vinegar and water. Placed on top of these cups, were rubber gloves. Before they conducted the experiment, they made three predictions, one person predicted that the sugar from the juice would run around inside of the glove and make it inflate, while another person predicted that the water would turn into a gas and shoot into the glove and inflate it and then the last person predicted that the vinegar would make a bad smell :).

They began to gently shake the cups. The first cup was the water, sadly nothing happened. Then they tried the juice and once again, nothing happened. This meant that there was only one more liquid left; vinegar. They shook the vinegar when all of a sudden the glove inflated. Their experiment had worked. We all gave them a round of applause and Brian Cox led some more scientists to do a new experiment.

In the new experiment, they had water with sugar, cornstarch and flour in water. they explained the differences between soluble things and insoluble things. They then added water into the cornstarch and mixed it around. They then began to say how the cornstarch mixed with water was a non – newtonian fluid. A non- newtonian fluid is something that isnt solid, a liquid or a gas.

We all enjoyed this assembly and cant wait for the next one.
