The Greatest Show!

This week, on Monday and Tuesday, Year 6 performed their fantastic end of school production, for the school and their parents. Over the past couple of weeks, they have been continuously practising their show to make it perfect and have put in the best effort they can to make it “The Greatest Show”!

Inspired by The Greatest Showman film, the Year 6 teachers put together their own original script. They followed the journey of a girl called Sam, who loved the circus, on her way to stardom, although along the way there was a few twists and turns! She had always longed to be a ringmaster and felt that the only place she belonged was the place she loved – the circus! Having to start at the bottom, Sam finds the circus life harder than she expected but got to meet many strange and unique people, to discover her inner self and confidence. The only way to prove herself is to find the missing elephant (Tiny), to show that this is what she has always wanted and that she is the girl for the job. However, when Barnum suddenly falls ill, there is only one more person left for the role of ringmaster, and Sam gets to live her dream, that has been alive inside her for many years!

Well done Year 6 for your fantastic performance this week – Mrs Keighley was in tears at the end of it, AND Mr Patterson said it was the best production he had ever seen!

Year 2 Yorkshire Wildlife Park Trip

On Thursday the 5th of July, Year 2 went on an amazing trip to Yorkshire Wildlife Park, as part of their animal learning in science! Eventhough the temperatures were through the roof, the children went around the park, looking at all the different animals, and learning some fun facts that they could use for their topic when they got back to school. Some of the animals they saw were: baboons, painted dogs, lemurs, wallabies, tigers, lions, rhinos, giraffes, polar bears and meerkats.

They moved onto a fantastic workshop all about polar bears, and learned some interesting information about their lifestyle. Polar bears are becoming endangered due to the ice caps which are melting because of global warming. Not only that, but some polar bears have sadly had to swim for 9 days non stop, just to find the next iceberg, and because they are melting, their food, seals, are also disappearing. The children found out that they could help the situation by turning off lights and electricity when we are not using them. They also learnt some facts about the polar bears appearance: they have small ears to keep the heat in; black skin to absorb heat; their fur isn’t white – its transparent; they weigh the same as a small car and they have large paws to stop them falling through the ice!

Year 2 said they had a fantastic day and they had a brilliant time although it was really warm! They enjoyed learning all about the different animals and the polar bears, and really enjoyed their workshop – Oscar even said it was the best trip ever!

Mindfulness Art Day!

On Thursday 28th and Friday 29th June, Year 2 took part in the fun mindfulness art day, which was all about developing art skills and learning how to draw and colour, carefully, but also it linked to their science topic, habitats.

The children used graphite and charcoal to draw to some music, which was called Vivaldi. They looked at how to shade pictures to give them depth and texture. They also used some similar materials, like charcoal and pastels to colour in different lines and patterns and shade to make them look real and professional: not only this, but they used shells and twigs to draw. However, they couldn’t look at them instead they had to draw from what they felt like! At the end of the session, the artwork they had created was amazing, full of bright colours and textures from ink and symbolised how they had worked together to create something fantastic!

Art day was a brilliant day and the children really enjoyed it, and some children said they would rate it 100% it was so amazing!

2P Class Assembly

This afternoon, 2P gave us a brilliant assembly, all about ‘Together We Can’, (the school motto)  and how they had been working together in different activities as a class, and helping each other do everything they needed to do. They thought about the time they work together in school, in every subject like science, maths and art, and that working as a team sometimes can be fun and helpful too.

They also told us about the book they had been reading, which was called The Day The Crayons Quit, and how all the crayons were very unhappy, until they started to work as a team to create beautiful, and brightly coloured pictures! Some of the children dressed up as the crayons, looking fantastic, and acted out how the crayons would feel, and that they felt they weren’t getting used enough, and wanted their colours to be shown off more! During art day, Year 2 had created a huge piece of artwork using brightly coloured inks and graphite, working together, and the outcome was amazing, all different textures and colours and patterns, which also symbolised how they had done it together, as a team to make something beautiful and brilliant, while enjoying doing it!

To finish off their fantastic performance, the children sang a fun song about being kind and helpful to eachother, and that it doesn’t take a lot to brighten someones day! Well done 2P!

3R Class Assembly

This afternoon, 3R performed a fabulous assembly for Blakehill, all based on the Stone age and the periods of prehistory (Stone age, Bronze age, ice age and iron age) , which means before written history. First came the Ice age, where huge glaciers were formed and the people had to move away, because of the ice. Eventually, once the ice had melted and gone, the humans moved back but discovered that things had been moved beneath the ice and glaciers. The people of the ice age were hunters and found their supplies theirselves.

They told us all about the other different stages, including the stone age, where they crafted tools from stone and were hunter gatherers, who were always moving around to new places. This stage of prehistory was supposedly the time of ‘early man’, where they wore animal skins for clothing, and painted cave art on the walls of their caves to show they existed later on in the future, and to also communicate, as words and communication was still developing. For food, they killed deer and other animals like that, saving the skin, and eating and storing the meat for meals.

They told us a little bit about the bronze age, where all supplies were crafted of bronze, and was an easy material to get hold of. This was similar to the iron age, where iron was a main source for tools and supplies, and the people lived in Hill Forts.

Next, they set the scene by comparing the modern to the past, where most people nowadays have ipads and ipods and iphones, which are used for pretty much every day of our lives. The prehistoric stages were very different though as they were crafting all day long and trying to thrive in the dangerous wilderness.

To finish off their fantastic assembly, the class sang We Will Rock You with a stone age twist! They gave many interesting facts and everybody learnt alot from their assembly, as well as enjoying it! Well done 3R!

SATS ARE OVER!

After a long,hard and stressful week, SATs are FINALLY over! Year 6 are very relieved and are anxious to see what results they will get, but meanwhile its time to focus on transition and preparing for Year 7! Yesterday afternoon, whilst watching a well-earned movie, Mrs Keighley kindly brought in some yummy ice lollies for them all to enjoy as a reward for their hard work, and they were very much appreciated! Today (Friday), year 6 have had a fantastic day, and got to have a relaxing time, which they really needed after the stress-filled week: movies have been watched, biscuits and buns have been eaten and everybody has been able to relieve their stress!

Well done Year 6 for all of your hard work and determination, and we hope you look forward to the rest of your time at Blakehill!

4J class assembly

This afternoon, Year Four had their class assembly about their residential to Nell Bank. To start off, they sang a song (that they had learnt whilst on their trip) to show off all of the exciting activities they had done. Two people in bright-orange jackets led the song and put actions with it and the rest of 4J followed.

They began to tell the audience about what they had done on their first day: mini beast hunting! They showed everybody what they found on their hunt, which was a centipede, an earthworm (did you know they breathe out of their skin?) and a woodlouse. As a treat, they got to go to the adventure playground for a little while as well as the water playground, where they got to play and have fun.

After a long, much-needed sleep, it was time for the next adventurous day, where they told the school all about the 7.5 mile walk they went on, from Nell Bank to Cow and Calf and then back again! Whilst at the Cow and Calf, the children were told a story about a giant, who lived near a huge, old cliff, with big boulders that were scattered around, and they really enjoyed it.

Tired out from their walk, we were told all about their experience of going to the adventure playground, which wore them out completely! On the last day, Year 4 went pond dipping and showed us some pictures of what they had found such as, a newt, baby snails and lots of other animals. Next, was the fantastic den building, and got to tell their groups all about their houses that they had built – someone even made a chandelier!

Sad, but glad to get back, the children finally went home, back to their parents, who they were very glad to see as some of the kids had never gone away without their mum and dad before. The children loved their trip and would have loved to stay longer. They performed a fantastic assembly to Blakehill!

Pebble River!

If you haven’t noticed, at the front of school reception, there has been a river bed dug out! Blakehill is asking you to bring in a stone/pebble, not too big but not too small, for you to design and make your own. After everybody has brought in their pebbles and they have been designed, we are going to put them in the dug out river bed outside reception. We are hoping that when it is all finished, the pebble river will look colourful and inviting and it will have a symbol of each of Blakehill’s pupils in it!

Make sure you bring your pebble in as soon as possible so we can start designing them! You will get a raffle ticket and you will be able to design your pebble to represent you and your personality, and will be put in the front of school for all to see!

Year 1 Skipton Castle Trip

This week, Year 1 took a visit to Skipton Castle as part of their topic on Knights and Castles. Once they had got there, they took a guided tour of the castle, looking in all of the different rooms and learning about castle life hundreds of years ago. As they entered the castle, they looked up and saw all of the remnants of different types of stone and tar that had been thrown at the enemy all those years ago. The children really enjoyed learning about the knights in the castle and all the different ways of protecting the castle back then. They also loved the fact that from the toilet it led straight down into the mud hole below!

In the afternoon, the children did some more exploring of the castle after their delicious lunch and sat and drew some fantastic pictures of the castle, that was in front of them. They drew different things around the castle and loved to put their own twist on them. They went through all the different rooms and learnt what they were used for in the olden days, and also found that the crumbling, stone walls were really interesting as you could imagine them being freshly built and lined with soldiers.

The children loved the trip and would definitely love to go again. Their favourite part was definitely the old flushing toilet!

E-Safety with Luke Carson

On Thursday afternoon, Year 6 had a visit from PCSO Luke Carson, who had come to talk to us about Online Bullying. Firstly, he spoke to us about the crimes that people can be fined and arrested for for Online Bullying and told us how much they would have to pay, how long they would be imprisoned for and that if your 10 years old or over then you were legally allowed to be arrested. He also spoke to us about the different types of Online Bullying such as: Trolling, harassment, mean comments, threats, hurtful comments and inappropriate pictures and videos.

Afterwards, we did an investigation about trying to find out who was the correct suspect in a online bullying crime. There were several clues and 10 suspects and we had to work out which one was the correct one. Going through the clues, many of us were set upon suspect 10 as he fitted all of the clues however when we looked closer, we saw that the phone number was one digit incorrect to the number in the clue. Then , we looked at suspect 4 who had all unknown information but was the only one left who matched the clues!

Luke Carson showed us a depressing but serious video of a boy who was being bullied just because he got an answer right in class. All of his classmates made fun of him and sent awful messages and emails to him via online and even made a website called Joeisaloser.com, which was a really horrible thing to do. This depressed the boy and he decided to record all of his thoughts and emotions on a video camera. But his mum found it just in time before he began to have serious thoughts and took it into school, who took the matter to the police. It was a really upsetting story but made us realise thats how easy it is to get bullied and that you should always be kind and caring to your classmates no matter what.

To finish it off, we listened to a funky song about fighting off bullies and it motivated us all to dance and sing along to support everybody who has been bullied or is being bullied now. Luke Carson taught us a really serious lesson but we really enjoyed it and made us think alot about what we do to our friends and how we treat people in every day life.
