What are Apprenticeships in England?

Apprenticeships are an excellent way of gaining qualifications and workplace experience. As an employee, you will earn as you learn and gain practical skills from the workplace. Training will include on the job training and arranged workshop sessions at a training centre.

To be considered for an apprenticeship programme in England​, you need to be:

  • aged 16 or over
  • living in England
  • not in full-time education

How do Apprenticeships work?

Apprenticeships are designed with the help of employers, so they offer a structured programme that takes you through the skills you need to do a job well. There are targets and checks to make sure that your employer is supporting you and you are making progress.

Apprenticeships would suit someone who:

  • has a clear idea of the type of career they wish to pursue
  • is willing to commit to work and study, but would prefer a more practical and work-related approach to learning
  • is ready to start work with an employer, and be based in the workplace most of the time
  • is well organised and able to cope with the competing demands of work and academic study at the same time
  • is ready to be assessed through a mix of assignments and written work, including essays, reports, practical exercises, end tests, and exams

What subjects and levels can I study?

Skills for Work offer Apprenticeships in the following areas:

  • Business Administration     Levels 2 &  3
  • Customer Service                Levels 2 & 3
  • Team Leader/Manager         Levels,2, 3 &  5
  • Public Service Operational Delivery Officer Level 3

 An Apprenticeship comprises:

  • Practical skills, knowledge and behaviours in specific occupational areas
  • Functional Skills e.g. English, Maths and in some cases ICT

Will I get paid?

Yes, the minimum salary is £3.70 per hour; however, many apprentices can earn more depending on their employer.

How long do Apprenticeships take?

Apprenticeships can take on average 12 to 18 months to complete depending on the level of Apprenticeship, the apprentices ability and the Industry Sector.
