Smile if you brush with fluoride

In Year 4 Science, the children have been conducting our final experiments on teeth and dental health.

Once again, we have used eggs as substitutes for teeth when testing.  This time we wanted to test whether fluoride toothpaste protected our teeth as well as cleaning them.

We rubbed half of an egg with toothpaste containing fluoride and left it for four days before rinsing it off.  Then we put the egg in an energy drink for 24 hours.

We were amazed by the results!

In the top picture the side that had toothpaste on stayed clear of the growth that stuck to the untreated side.

In the second picture we can see the way the energy drink had burned through the unprotected shell (on the left this time).

Our conclusion was that when we brush our teeth we shouldn’t rinse away the toothpaste.

We also tested some of our tooth brushing techniques with disclosing tablets but the results were too disgusting to share!
