Florence Nightingale visits Year 2

Year  2 had a visit from a very significant person called “Florence Nightingale”.

She came to tell the children about her life as a nurse and her travels to Scutari in Turkey where she nursed soldiers who were injured in the Crimean war. When she arrived there she found that the hospital was very dirty, bandages were re-used, bed sheets were filthy and rats were running around everywhere. So she and her nurses and porters decided to tidy it all up and get clean bandages and sheets. They also got fresh food and clean water. All these things helped the soldiers to get better. At night she checked on the soldiers using her lamp to light the way. We still use Florence Nightingale’s methods today and that is why she is a “significant person” and is known as “The Lady of the Lamp”.

Year 2 – Remembrance Day

Year 2 showed a great deal of compassion during their work about Remembrance Day. They created a beautiful wreath and wrote some very moving letters to soldiers. In the letters they expressed their thanks, respect and prayers to those who had lost their lives or been injured in conflicts.

They made us very proud.

Florence Nightingale visits Year 2

Year 2 have been finding out about significant people from the past. As part of their research, they have been looking at Florence Nightingale. Luckily, she was able to visit us in school and share her achievements and what life was really like during her lifetime.

Florence brought in some items for us to touch and see. There was also some smells so that we could really imagine what it was like at the hospital in Scutari.

We also did some drama. The children could choose whether to be porters or nurses.

They had to:

  • Travel to Scutari on a boat for 2 weeks
  • Clean the hospital at Scutari
  • Remove all dirty bandages and bedding
  • Use clean clothes and clean sheets
  • Get rid of all the rats
  • Make sure that any injured soldiers had clean bandages
  • Give the soldiers healthy food to eat
  • Empty bed pans!!!

Florence Nightingale was significant because she changed how people were looked after when they were ill. Her changes to nursing are still used today. She was known as the “Lady of the Lamp” because at night time she would go and check on the soldiers with a small lamp in her hand.

Year 2 really enjoyed their visit from Florence Nightingale.

Year 2’s trip to Nell Bank

On Thursday 25th May 2017 Year 2 set off on an adventure to Nell Bank in Ilkley. The aim of their visit was to learn about Animal Habitats and how animals use their senses.

Once we got there we split into groups. We all had a turn at the following activities:

The Badger Sniff (a smelling trail), the Mole Walk (a blindfold trail), The Mouse Maze (being a mouse(prey) avoiding the owl (predator), The Rabbit Run (to see which animal can get down a hole), Pond dipping, Minibeasting and finally Water play.

When we were minibeast hunting we had to sort and classify the creatures into animals with no legs, animals with 2 legs, 4 legs, 6 legs, 8 legs and too many legs to count. Once we had observed the creatures, we had to let them go carefully back into the wild.

Whilst we were pond dipping we found lots of different creatures who live in and around ponds. Some even changed their habitat from the pond to the land and air.

We found a wide variety of creatures in and around the pond. There were water boatman, water spiders, water snails, newts, dragonfly nymphs, mayfly nymphs, tadpoles, froglets, mayflies and dragonflies.

Finally, it was time to explore and have fun in the water play area. We really enjoyed ourselves here as it had been a very hot and busy day.

After being such intrepid explorers and mini scientists we were all ready for a sit-down and the ride back to school.

We had worked hard and played hard!!

We all had a super, sunny, sensational day out!!
