All about George Stephenson

Early life

As a child George worked with his dad in coal mines to make money. George did not go to school because his parents couldn’t afford it. He was born on the 9/5/1781.

Why was he famous?

George built the first steam locomotive (a train engine) that was used for passenger trains. George built the locomotive that went from Darlington to Stockton.

The first passenger railway

The railway helped people move around more quickly. In 1819 George was asked to build a
small railway track and it went national. The first iron railway track was built. George guessed that it would go up to 30 miles per hour!

George’s family

George married Francis Henderson in 1832. George had a son called Robert who was able to go to school as George became a rich man after the railway tracks were built. Unfortunately, George’s father was killed by a train!

That’s very interesting and funny that he thought 30 mph was fast. Can you find out how fast the fastest train in the world now is?
