Bradford Summer School Games

Silsden at the Summer School Games!

Seventeen children proudly represented Silsden Primary School at the Bradford Summer School Games today. The event took place at the great facilities at Bradford Grammar School – a real treat for the children. After an opening ceremony (in which Taila was chosen to read out the participants’ oath on behalf on all – 700 or so? – competitors), we split into our teams to take part in the different competitions.

Tag Rugby

In a group with some extremely strong competition, Silsden played very well for our first 3 games. Unfortunately, we suffered two defeats (v Low Ash and Trinity) either side of an excellent victory (v Newhall Park). With qualification for the knockouts out of reach, the final group game (v Girlington) was a fight for 3rd place in the group. Toby put it down to the long rest in between games, but for some reason we weren’t quite at our best and therefore finished 4th in the group.

  • Player of the day: Amelia
  • Tries: Harry (2), Jack (2), Tom (2), Dan
  • Squad: Dan (c), Toby, Amelia, Taila, Ebony, Harry, Jack, Tom, Josh

Year 5 Tennis

Played – much to our surprise – on full size courts, the team had a real learning experience against strong opposition. But it was heartening to see nerves disappear quickly and confidence – and performances – improve over all the matches. Abi was chuffed to pick up two victories, whilst Toby, Tom and Holly acquitted themselves – and Silsden – superbly with their effort.

  • Players of the Day: All of them!
  • Squad: Toby, Tom, Abi, Holly

Year 4 Tennis

After a late change of venue, our Year 4 team was able to enjoy the sunshine for their afternoon event. With little experience between them, the first match proved very difficult (Isobel managing our sole win), but what a comeback in match 2 with all four team members winning their games! The improved form continued into our final two fixtures but we fell slightly short of progression to the knockouts – ending in 3rd place in our group of five. All 4 players seem to have caught the tennis bug though – and we hope they will continue to play regularly.

  • Players of the day: All of them!
  • Squad: Umar, Isobel, Kuba, Shiloh

Well done to all the participants – we hope you enjoyed the day! Every team member represented the spirit of the Games perfectly and did Silsden proud!
