U11 Boys Football – Bronte Pool Champions!

U11 Boys Football Squad: Alfie, Archie, Callum, Harry, James M, James R (c), Josh, Toby, Tom

Our U11 squad won all five of their matches tonight at the first pool of the Bronte School Games cluster tournament. In doing so, the boys now progress (along with the Pool 2 winners) to the Bradford Winter Games on February 14th next year. Well done!

Match 1: 4-0 v Stanbury

Silsden started with a comprehensive victory against a youthful, but enthusiastic, Stanbury side. Skipper James R notched a hat-trick – turning in from a goalmouth scramble after a corner, knocking in a rebound after Archie’s shot was saved, then prodding in after a long throw. With little defending to do, Tom took the chance to venture forward to grab the other goal.

Match 2: 3-0 v St Joseph’s

In a match against last season’s pool winners, Silsden withstood a bit of early pressure to eventually run out comfortable winners. A quick Archie throw led to James R racing through to grab the opener, and he quickly added a second too. James R then turned provider – beating his man before teeing up Josh for the finish. Toby was assured in reading the play from the back whilst Callum pulled off a fine save from an early St Joseph’s chance.

Match 3: 3-2 v Beckfoot Nessfield

In our closest match of the evening, the team responded brilliantly to going one down by equalising almost immediately. James R was again the creator – breaking down the left and returning the ball (after his initial shot was saved) for Archie to tuck home. Silsden then nosed ahead – James R again – but were pegged back to 2-2 with a second cracking finish from the Beckfoot Nessfield striker. Our preferred attacking route via the left wing again provided the final breakthrough – James R crossing for Alfie to knock in. With the opposition deflated, the boys could have added more but for a couple of glaring misses from Toby and Archie (think Ronnie Rosenthal – a reference for the older readers there…!).

Match 4: 3-0 v Victoria

With confidence high, Silsden brushed aside a physical Victoria side and would’ve had more but for a string of fine interventions from their keeper. James M put in the first before Josh had a fine shot tipped over and Toby put narrowly over the bar from James R’s cross. After a couple of nervy moments were settled by watchful defending from Harry, Josh stole turned in a shot from James R before Toby finally got on the score sheet – mopping up after James R’s Maradona-esque mazy dribble.

Match 5: 1-0 v Oakworth

The squad had identified the Oakworth team as the ones to beat right from the outset – as some players were familiar to them from other events. And it turned out to be the closest affair, with a single goal proving to be the difference. Taking a throw-in from right in front of his manager, James R followed the firm and clear advice to “hurl it right into the mixer,” and before you knew it, Josh was clean through to place it past the keeper (assist: Mr Pickering). Oakworth responded well and an almighty goal mouth scramble after a corner led to Toby and Harry repeatedly blocking resolutely just a few feet from the goal line. With the pressure rebuffed, James R had time for one final trademark dribble but the shot was deflected wide when it looked as if he’d sealed the win in style.

Well done to the whole squad. Callum produced saves when needed, Tom and Harry showed great defensive composure to limit the opposition’s opportunities, our rotating midfield of Josh, Archie, Alfie, James M and Toby worked tirelessly and all chipped in with goals, whilst James R ran the show up top.

Player of the evening: Skipper James R – some fine dribbling and classy finishing.

Goal scorers: James R – 6; Josh – 3; Alfie, Archie, James M, Toby & Tom – all 1.
