Y5 Water Topic #2 – Water Filters

How can you turn dirty water into clean water? Year 5 can tell you!

Using just plastic bottles, cotton wool, sand and gravel, we managed to make our water much cleaner (even if not quite clean enough to drink!).

Why does it work? What does each layer of the filter do?

Y5 Water Topic #1 – The Fighting Temeraire

Year 5 have been making a splash with our new topic, water, this term. In art, we’ve been studying paintings of the sea by the artist JMW Turner.

We evaluated his famous painting ‘The Fighting Temeraire’ and then made our own 3D versions of it. What do you think? (Note: The first one is by Turner, the rest by Y5!)

Year 5 have been experimenting with the craft of quilling this week – an art form popular in Victorian times that involves rolling and sticking thin strips of paper to create decorative designs.

What do you think of our Christmas cards?

Y5 Box Apartments

This week in Maths we’ve been busy planning and measuring the rooms for our box apartments.

We’ve calculated the area of each room – how much carpet will we need?

And also the perimeter – how many rolls of wallpaper?

***UPDATE*** Construction took place this weekend – here’s just some of the apartments we produced! Great work everyone.

Y5 William Morris Designs

As part of their Topic work, Year 5 have been learning about the Victorian artist and designer William Morris. The children have been inspired by his use of plants and nature in his repeating pattern wallpaper designs.

The process involved sketching in the Wildlife garden, etching into polystyrene squares, then printing with ink onto paper.

What do you think to our designs? More will be on display near the dining hall staircase very soon!

Y5/6 Girls’ Netball Competition

On Thursday evening, eight Year 5/6 girls represented Hothfield in a tournament at Holy Family School.

Sofia (5C) impressively scored all 4 of the team’s goals and was awarded player of the day.

Our Hothfield team ended up winning one of our three matches, with all of the squad playing really well together. They, and Mrs Meakin, are already looking forward to the next matches!

Well done to all involved: Sofia, Rianna, Alix, Emilie, Rachel, Alana, Scarlet and Emily.

Girls’ Football at South Craven

The Year 5 girls (and Chloe in Y4) played a great tournament at South Craven Secondary School this afternoon, finishing in 3rd position out of 6 teams. The girls won 1 match, drew 3 and narrowly lost their fixture against the eventual winners. With only 3 points separating 1st and 3rd, the girls were only a few lucky breaks and a rather controversial refereeing decision away from overall victory.

It was a fantastic all round effort, especially in the unfamiliar indoor sports hall conditions. Chloe displayed great finishing to grab the goals, Lola showed off her passing and leadership skills, whilst Alana, Marissa, Grace, Sofia, Oliwia, Scarlet and goalkeeper Sahiba all contributed to a rock solid defensive display – conceding only 2 goals in 5 matches.

Well done everyone!
