The children at the Hothfield site enjoyed two brilliant sports days this week – with great effort and enthusiasm shown by all participants.
Thank you to all the children who were running the events (Y6 for the Y34 afternoon, Y4 for the Y56 afternoon) and to the many parents who came along to support.
The Aire View site will be having their event next week after a wet weather postponement.
House Cup winners will also be announced next week!
The Hothfield hall today played host to fabulous musical evening in which many of our students shared their musical talents with parents, staff and friends.
There was a mixture of instruments (voice, keyboard, piano, guitar, clarinet, flute, drums…) and of musical styles – truly something for everyone. Robyn also shared some of her performance poetry skills!
It was great to see so many performers overcoming any nerves and enjoying putting a magnificent show! We hope that it inspires others to join in and to try something new next year (pupils or staff!).
A huge thank you for the support from parents and to Mr Crossley for arranging the evening and inspiring so many of the children with his own musical talents. And thank you also to all the visiting music teachers for helping the children make such fantastic progress this year.
But the biggest congratulations needs to go to all the performers – a superb achievement of which you all should be very proud.

Seventeen children proudly represented Silsden Primary School at the Bradford Summer School Games today. The event took place at the great facilities at Bradford Grammar School – a real treat for the children. After an opening ceremony (in which Taila was chosen to read out the participants’ oath on behalf on all – 700 or so? – competitors), we split into our teams to take part in the different competitions.
Tag Rugby
In a group with some extremely strong competition, Silsden played very well for our first 3 games. Unfortunately, we suffered two defeats (v Low Ash and Trinity) either side of an excellent victory (v Newhall Park). With qualification for the knockouts out of reach, the final group game (v Girlington) was a fight for 3rd place in the group. Toby put it down to the long rest in between games, but for some reason we weren’t quite at our best and therefore finished 4th in the group.
Player of the day: Amelia
Tries: Harry (2), Jack (2), Tom (2), Dan
Squad: Dan (c), Toby, Amelia, Taila, Ebony, Harry, Jack, Tom, Josh
Year 5 Tennis
Played – much to our surprise – on full size courts, the team had a real learning experience against strong opposition. But it was heartening to see nerves disappear quickly and confidence – and performances – improve over all the matches. Abi was chuffed to pick up two victories, whilst Toby, Tom and Holly acquitted themselves – and Silsden – superbly with their effort.
Players of the Day: All of them!
Squad: Toby, Tom, Abi, Holly
Year 4 Tennis
After a late change of venue, our Year 4 team was able to enjoy the sunshine for their afternoon event. With little experience between them, the first match proved very difficult (Isobel managing our sole win), but what a comeback in match 2 with all four team members winning their games! The improved form continued into our final two fixtures but we fell slightly short of progression to the knockouts – ending in 3rd place in our group of five. All 4 players seem to have caught the tennis bug though – and we hope they will continue to play regularly.
Players of the day: All of them!
Squad: Umar, Isobel, Kuba, Shiloh
Well done to all the participants – we hope you enjoyed the day! Every team member represented the spirit of the Games perfectly and did Silsden proud!
Congratulations to our Year 3&4 cricket team who today finished 3rd in the Bronte School Games Summer Smash tournament.
With 6 teams competing, our ‘Silsden Smashers’ got off to a rocky start against tough opposition (inc. the eventual winners). But they bounced back superbly in the later games to end with a record of Won 3 and Lost 2.
Proud to be representing Silsden were: Isabel, Archie, Oliver, Connor, Alex, Alfie, Finley, Jack, Thomas and Leah.
8 budding mathematicians from Years 3 and 4 attended a challenge evening at South Craven secondary school on Wednesday.
The children tackled sudokus, solved problems, entered into a rapid mental maths relay and undertook a construction task to build a freestanding tower using just straws and paperclips!
The event was enjoyed by all and provided a fantastic opportunity for an early insight into secondary school life.
Well done to all of the team (Alex, Ben, Ronnie, Umayma, Isaac, Rory, Keyaan and Fin) who earned a 4th place finish out of 7 schools.
As you can see from the look of concentration on their faces, this task tested not only their fine motor skills but also proved a stern challenge for ‘the old clay matter’…
In Year 4 Science, the children have been conducting our final experiments on teeth and dental health.
Once again, we have used eggs as substitutes for teeth when testing. This time we wanted to test whether fluoride toothpaste protected our teeth as well as cleaning them.
We rubbed half of an egg with toothpaste containing fluoride and left it for four days before rinsing it off. Then we put the egg in an energy drink for 24 hours.
We were amazed by the results!
In the top picture the side that had toothpaste on stayed clear of the growth that stuck to the untreated side.
In the second picture we can see the way the energy drink had burned through the unprotected shell (on the left this time).
Our conclusion was that when we brush our teeth we shouldn’t rinse away the toothpaste.
We also tested some of our tooth brushing techniques with disclosing tablets but the results were too disgusting to share!
