Y56 Girls’ Football

The Silsden Squad

It was the turn of the Year 5 and 6 girls to represent Silsden at the Bradford & Keighley 5V5 tournament at Marley A.C.C on Wednesday. With a real mix of experience on the team, the girls performed with great effort and enthusiasm but unfortunately did not progress out of the group stages in a tough competition.

Well done to all the girls! Leah made great progress with her goalkeeping, Grace and Ava were rock solid at the back, Olivia and Abi didn’t stop running, whilst Ebony and Alicea kept on firing shots at goal.

Player of the tournament: Grace – some outstanding defending, positional play and a fantastic partnership with Ava!

Silsden 0-0 Ley Top

In our opening game, Silsden were camped in the Ley Top half for almost the entire game. It was just like watching Arsenal – all the possession but no shots. The closest we came was a looping speculative effort from Alicea. Then right at the last minute, Ley Top almost snatched the winner but for a fantastic save from Leah with her outstretched leg.

Merlin Top 2-0 Silsden

In the ‘purple derby’, both teams started well. After pressure from both sides, it was Merlin Top who took the lead with their star striker breaking clear to slot past a helpless Leah. Silsden then began the bombardment of the opposition goal, with Abi, Alicea and Ebony (several times) going close. With the girls pushing for an equaliser, Merlin Top grabbed a second right at the death (and went on to win the group).

Silsden 1-1 Baildon CE 2

Silsden finally hit the back of the net in Game 3 with Ebony firing in. Dominating the game, we paid the price of pushing for a second and were again hit on the break for an equaliser. Unfortunately, there was little time left to grab a winner.

Silsden 0-0 Lidget Green

In another one-sided affair, Silsden were again unlucky not to grab the vital goal. As in other games, it was Ebony and Alicea – along with Olivia and Abi – leading the assault on the opposition goal but neither could break through.

Bowling Park 0-0 Silsden

Our final game brought our third goalless draw. The post denied Alicea early on, whilst Ebony fired wide when in a great position. The defence, who had been strong all night, stood firm again as Bowling Park pushed forward – tackle of the night going to Ava for a great last ditch interception.
