U11 Tag Rugby

Harry and Toby at Cougar Park

Our school tag rugby squad had a fantastic afternoon at Cougar Park today. The team, featuring eight Year 6 children and one from Year 5, took part in the Keighley area finals and played magnificently throughout. By finishing 4th out of the 7 teams (which could quite easily have been 2nd), we have qualified for next week’s Bradford Schools Finals – a superb achievement for a squad with such a mix of rugby experience.

From 6 games, we won 2, drew 2 and lost 2 – finishing with 10 points. Results below…

  • v Holycroft 4-4
  • v Parkwood 4-1
  • v Cullingworth 3-3
  • v Steeton 6-7
  • v Long Lee 6-3
  • v Ghyll Royd 2-5

Squad: Taila B, Jack G, Daniel G (c), Tom G, Harry H, Ebony J, Amelia N, Josh N, Toby P

Try Scorers: Daniel (10), Ebony (5), Harry (4), Jack (3), Tom (3)

Year 6 Tag Rugby Tournament

On Thursday, Hothfield took part in a tag rugby competition at South Craven School. We entered 2 teams into the competition and had 18 players participate altogether.

Our B team unfortunately lost their 3 group matches but they played some good tag rugby and visibly grew in confidence with each match they played.

Our A team won 2 and lost 1 of their group games. They finished 2nd in their group and qualified for the semi-finals. We eventually lost the semi-final.

All the players really enjoyed themselves and displayed superb sportsmanship throughout the competition.

Year 5 Tag Rugby Tournament

12 children from Year 5 today represented Hothfield in a tag rugby tournament at Cougar Park, home of the Keighley Cougars. An impressive 14 local schools were taking part and we were drawn in what turned out to be the so-called ‘Group of Death’ alongside Long Lee, Glusburn and Worth Valley.

We dominated our first match against Worth Valley and were unlucky to be pegged back to a 2-2 draw (Rio scored the 2 tries). The second match vs. Glusburn was a more one-sided affair which we won by an impressive 4 tries to 1 (Alfie 3, Mitchell 1). That left a winner-takes-all match against high-flying Long Lee, who had won their opening 2 matches. It was a fast-paced, high quality contest with tries galore that was richly enjoyed by our onlooking support from the stands. Unfortunately we were on the wrong side of the final 5-4 scoreline (tries from Sulaiman, Mitchell, Archie and Alfie).

All members of the squad contributed superbly to a valiant effort and it says a lot that Long Lee went on to win the whole tournament. It has been great to see so many of the Y5 children enthused by the tag-rugby sessions this term and a pleasure to share the trip to Cougar Park with them today.

Squad: Alfie, Archie, Edward BC, Elouise, Holly, James I, Katelyn, Mitchell, Natalia, Rio, Sam B, Sulaiman

Tag Rugby competition

Yesterday some year 6 pupils took part in a tag rugby competition at Cougar Park.

We won our first game 4-1 against Worth Valley. Lost our second 4-2 against Nessfield. Then, in our final group game we drew 1-1 with Settle. This meant we had to play Settle again in the semi final.

Now, tag rugby matches between Hothfield and Settle are notorious for being close matches (last year 18 minutes of extra time was played before Settle scored a ‘Golden Try’ to win the final). This year’s match was no different. Hothfield’s boys showed tremendous resilience and determination, often defending close to their own try line. At full time the score was 1-1. In extra time it was Hpthfield that managed to score the ‘Golden Try’ as Finlay dodged and whizzed his way past a tiring Settle back line. A magnificient effort, but this was only the semi- final.

In the final we played Nessfield again but could not repeat our heroics of the previous match and ended up losing narrowly 1-0.

I do not know where the Hothfield players got all their energy from, but they should be mightily proud of themselves.

It was also wonderful to hear other schools commenting upon our sporting attitude and good fair play.

Kyle won the player of the tournament award.

Year 6 tag rugby tournament

On Tuesday afternoon, some of our year 6 pupils took part in a tag rugby tournament.

The boys’ team won 5 of their 6 group matches and ended up finishing top of the group. They narrowly lost by a score of 3-2 in the final. Kyle won the player of the tournament award.

The girls’ team improved as the tournament went on. The first 2 games resulted in narrow defeats. They then drew their next 4 games 1-1, but managed to win their last match 2-1.

Well done Hothfielders!

Tag rugby competition at Addingham.

We had some success on the rugby pitch today as our year 6 girls rugby team emerged victorious in a competition against Settle and Addingham. They won a tense final 3-2 against Addingham, having won 1 game and drawn 1 game in the group matches.

The boys team finished 3rd out of 6 teams. They won 2 games, drew 1 and narrowly lost 2 games.

Y4 tag rugby champions.

Our y4 tag rugby teams played some awesome rugby today. Hothfield reds finished in 9th place with a 3-0 win in their playoff. Hothfield blues won the competition with a try in the final seconds of the game from Archie to make it 4-3.
Hothfield blues managed to win all of their matches and, as a consequence, Hothfield will have a team in the regional finals.
Go Hothfield!!!
