Year 5/6 Boys’ Football

On Tuesday 25th June, Silsden’s year 5/6 boys’ football team took part in the annual Bradford schools 5-a-side competition at Marley, Keighley.

Silsden were represented by Lennon, Harry MS, Harry S, Saif, Edward, James R and Josh C.

Our first match was against Holycroft. Some sensational passing football allowed us to score 4 unanswered goals, the best of which was scored by Harry MS after a precise long ball from Lennon. Edward scored a hat-trick in this game.

The second match was a narrow 2-1 defeat to St. John’s. After going behind to an early goal, Edward equalised but we conceded almost immediately from the kick off.

The third match was a narrow 1-0 win against Eastwood. Despite creating plenty of chances, only Harry MS was able to put one in the back of the net. Josh C was particularly impressive in defence in this match.

The fourth match was another narrow 1-0 win against Our Lady and St Bernard’s. In this must-win match James scored the only goal from close range. Harry S made some vital saves in goal.

Knowing we needed to win both of our remaining matches to progress, the boys put on a stunning display against Beckfoot Heston – winning the match 6-0 (Harry MS scored 4; Josh and Edward both scored a goal too). Saif added plenty of tenacity in defence; winning the ball back every time it entered our half.

So it went down to the final game against Thackley. A winner takes all match. Thackley were a good team and scored really early on. We created a couple of good chances but didn’t manage to hit the target.

All in all, Silsden gave a good account of themselves. We missed out on qualifying for the quarter finals on goal difference. As ever, great sportsmanship was shown by our players.

Tag rugby competition at Addingham.

We had some success on the rugby pitch today as our year 6 girls rugby team emerged victorious in a competition against Settle and Addingham. They won a tense final 3-2 against Addingham, having won 1 game and drawn 1 game in the group matches.

The boys team finished 3rd out of 6 teams. They won 2 games, drew 1 and narrowly lost 2 games.

Pictures to follow…

Basketball tournament

Year 6 pupils took part in a basketball competition at Holy Family school on Tuesday. There were only 2 schools involved. Both our boys and girls teams finished 2nd to St. Stephens.

The boys’ match started off quite one-sided but Hothfield grew in confidence and the second half was a much closer contest.

The girls’ match was an end to ebd game which Hothfield narrowly lost but there were only a couple of baskets between the sides.

Kensuke’s Kingdom

As part of our Summer of Sport learning, year 6 will be reading, discussing and reflecting upon Kensuke’s Kingdom by Michael Morpurgo.  We’d like year 6 to keep posting blogs to express your thinking as we read – those who know the book, please don’t give anything away.

Have you read any other Michael Morpurgo books?

We’d love all of you out there to say which you’ve enjoyed and why?
