Summer School Geocaching

Many secondary schools are running transition sumer schools throughout August for new to Year 7 pupils. Last week the Curriculum ICT team were invited to deliver a geocaching day based on the Olympics at Parkside School. The team arrived early to set up 10 hidden ‘caches’ around the school’s vast grounds. In each cache there was  a multiple choice question based on the Olympics. Each of the answers corresponded to a code. When all the codes were collected,  this allowed the pupils to open a digital safe. Inside the safe there were a further two challenges. Challenge 2 was to complete a real geocaching route around the local village of Cullingworth and Challenge 3 was to create a 1 minute video explaining what geocaching is using iPod Touches. The GPS devices we use track how far the pupils have travelled in a day. By the end of the day we had travelled a total of 10.2km whilst having fun in the sun.
