Using Skype as a stimulus for writing
During our Media Literacy Training evaluation day I mentioned I was happy to Skype in to schools as a character. That did it. Sarah, a teacher at Wibsey Primary School sent me an email a few days later asking if I could take on the role of a troll for a Skype call to her year two class. This would start their Literacy topic in fine style so how could I resist?
A few emails back and forth and a troll mask purchased from eBay and we were ready to go. The video was filmed at The Innovation Centre, listen carefully and you can hear the excited reactions of the children. There are also some photos from the classroom at the other end.
I was delighted to receive the letter and picture in the gallery above along with a pair of new socks to replace the cheesy ones Mr Troll wears. Sarah said the children loved the experience and it provided an exciting and unusual way to encourage children to write persuasively. Rest assured that Mr Troll is now a reformed character, he will think of others and is willing to share his meadow with the Billy Goats Gruff.
We have the facilities at the Innovation Centre Bradford to createa top class Skyping session. We have 100mb braoband, a HD cinema screen room for screening and backdrop. If you would like your school to Skype with a character then please contact Tim Bleazard, Steve Dale or James Langley
