Emerald Weekly Review

on May 11, 2012

We have been investigating 2D and 3D shapes this week and some of the class have been looking at Euler’s special number. If you add the number ofย faces and vertices then take away the number of edges what number do you get?

number of faces + number of vertices – number of edges = ??

Is this true for all 3D shapes? Investigate and reply with your findings. Above is a picture of a table to show all the information, thank you Lewis for letting us show your work.

In science we made paper spinners to investigate forces.ย

We also started to read a book together calledย Journey to Jo’Burg about a journey taken by some children in South Africa during Apartheid. We will continue to read this book and discuss the issues it raises over the coming weeks.

The big news is we finally have our class fish ๐Ÿ™‚ Thank you to Jolleys Pet Shop for providing the fish and helping us to a great start. They don’t have names yet but I’m sure they will have soon!

Homework this week has been about investigating 3D shapes (at the top of this blog), a spelling investigation and also a science reading sheet about forces.

Have a good weekend.

Dear mr parkin am extremly happy about the new fish but what are the different types of fish in the tank?

    from gabriel:D

    • mrjparkin says:

I’ll get a list with pictures sorted so we all know what they are.

    • Eleanor T Emerald says:

      Hi Gabriel,
The fish in the photo are neontetras, we also have some guppies and black mollies. I’m not too sure what the rest are.

I did not do this work in class but I had a go……………….

        faces vertices edges Eulers rule

        square based pyramid 5 4 8 1
        cube 6 4 12 -2
        triangular based pyramid 4 3 6 1
        cuboid 6 4 12 -2

        What is Eulers special number?

Dear mr parkin have you decided what book we are going to read since we have finished the graveyard book and my dad got the graveyard book from keighley libery and he is reading it.

    from gabriel:D

    • mrjparkin says:

      Not yet, I’m still thinking…

I hope your dad enjoys the book.

      • Louisa says:

Hello Mr Parkin!!! I know this has nothing to so wiht maths or the fish, but maybe could we read a thicker book please??? Louisa ๐Ÿ™‚

  3. gabriel says:

What type of names where you thinking of for the fish?

    From Gabriel:D

    • mrjparkin says:

Any suggestions? I think we should all have some ideas to choose from – there are quite a lot of fish to name!

      • gabriel says:

dear mr parkin maybe for the different types of fish they could be different types of bands so we dont have to remember all of the names we call the fish.Plus they dont have to be bands they could be just a group of people how have done somthing to remember from gabriel ๐Ÿ˜€

  4. Ellen says:

    Maths Eulers special number

    Cylinder-.Faces 3 + 0 Vertices -2 edges =1

So it looks like Euler’s number doesn’t always work.

  5. Lewis L says:

The special number 2 dosn’t always work

a cylnder has the number of 1

Im really glad that we have got our class fish. I think it will be very hard to call all of the fish because we will forget all the names! Louisa ๐Ÿ˜‰

  7. Zoe and Eleanor says:

Are the fish going to have names?

  8. Anonymous says:

Im so glad we have got our class fish like Louisa said it willl be very hard to name them but we will eventully. We all like staring at the fish beacuse they are cute. Ellie B ๐Ÿ˜‰

    • Louisa says:

Ellie, youre right, we will eventually get the names for the fish and we might forget them, but we will get tere soon!!! ๐Ÿ˜€ ๐Ÿ™‚ Louisa

  9. Zoe, Eleanor and Ruby says:

We know that the fish with the coloured wavy tails and black bodies are the guppies, the ones with the red streak down the middle are neontetras but were not so sure about the rest!We know that the fish breath through their gills of course!!!!!!!

Hello Mr Parkin!!! About the fish, like I said earlier on today, it will be tricky to call the fish names. I thought we could call the black fish 1 nam, the see through fish with a green line in the middle, we could call all of them a name, ect!!! ๐Ÿ™‚ if we are calling them names soon, I can’t wai!!! ๐Ÿ˜€ Louisa
