Genetically modified foods

on March 9, 2013

On Friday I showed Narwhal class two information films all about genetically modified (GM) foods. I would like the children to research this subject in more detail and decide if GM foods are a good thing or not.

    Hi Mr Burns,

I don’t like the idea of farmars putting stuff on their crops that kill pests. Then we are eating them.

I don’t think they are good things!

    🙂

Hi mr parkin, in the past plants have been inproved by breeding them with other better plants a natural process wich takes years. But whith gm foods it is done quickly and artificially and lots of pepole are worried about it.xx

    Hi,
I think there are good things and bad things about G M foods.
    Good
. Helps people in Africa because crops can
    grow faster.
. Places like Africa have droughts and GM crops use less water.
. It might stop people from starving.
. Gm foods last longer so there wont be as much waste unlike other foods.
. Gm foods might be cheaper.

    Bad
.GM foods poison insects we dont know if they will poison humans or not.
.we don,t know if adding fluids into the foods will affect the foods.
. Research could be very expensive.

  4. Daisy says:

GM stands for genetically modified foods. The food has been changed by scientists in a laboratory.

GM foods have been grown in a few farms in Britain.

Lots of people have become worried about GM foods so a lot of supermarkets have banned them.

Scientists and campaigners are arguing if they are a good thing or not.

    Campaigners argue:
They could damage your health, rats given GM food didn’t grow properly.
Different species (plants and animals) are being mixed up, it’s not natural.
There is no long term testing to see if they are dangerous to humans or not.

    Scientist argue:
They can save peoples lives who would die of hunger.

I don’t think they are a good thing because there hasn’t been any proper tests and we don’t know if they are safe or not.

  5. Mia says:

Scientests get jean out of flat fish out of the sea and put them in fruit like tomatos and then they can grow in the cold and they make bugs not eat the plants .
But they havent tryed it on humans so they might hurt us!

  6. Matthew says:

genetically modified foods have to be EU approved before they can be sold in Europe.

  7. millie narwhal class says:

I do not think it is good because we could be eating it write now and we could get ill.

  8. Rhys says:

How do we now that it is good for us if it kills insecs WE MITE DIE

  9. nuala says:

HI i think gm foods are bad bye

  10. Mr Burns says:

Remember last week we discovered that by genetically modifying some foods we can grow more food more quickly, great news!
However, we also saw that genetically modified foods are untested and their could be side effects!
Can you research other ways that might help farmers to grow more food quickly?

  11. connor says:

This is a list of them

    .Rice
    .Soybean
    .Sugar cane
    .Tomatoes
    .Corn
    .Sweat corn

    Thats all I know. 🙂

    US PERSONALLY !!
If it hasn’t been fully tested and scientists aren’t sure if its safe then why are they allowed to sell them? wont they get arrested ?
Acute poisoning from pesticides does not occur, produce is inspected and the growers have to keep accurate records of pesticide application to insure that residues are at acceptable levels. The real health concerns have focused on the effects of chronic ingestion of pesticides, there is currently no evidence to show that there are any negative health effects but as this is a very long term study any results will necessarily take a long time. The effects of genetic modification on health are not know, however, as the modifications don’t add anything to the plant/animal that wasn’t there in the first place there is no reason to believe that there will be health problems associated with genetically modified plants and animals.

  13. stan says:

They are bad things and shoud not be encouragd. GM plants mite breed with other plants and make something noone planned and the coud kill all the bees too.

  14. Saskia says:

I think its great and a good idear if it helps people. But how do you know if your going to die just by eating?
Those comments might put me off my tea.
I wouldn’t want to be a scientist test dummy

    Would you ??:-( 😀

  15. Saskia year 5 almost year 6 says:

Well, GM could be A. Dangerous and B. Great. People need to learn to be patience, would you rather wait for crops and know there good and safe to eat or get crops quicker and know they could kill you. Also if people start the GM on food and sell it it could start that horse meat thing again. Just my thoughts :-)) XD

  16. saskia yr 6 says:

I WOULD NOT BUY GM FOODS OR EAT THEM! If I went to the shop and everything was GM ii would never, ever, ever eat again! but that would never happen………

    would it ???:|

  17. saskia yr 6 says:

p.s I have to say insects WILL go exstinct
