Autumn 1 Year 2

Welcome back to Autumn 1 in Year 2. The children have settled well in to the new school term and have shown how ready they are for new and exciting learning in Year 2!

This half term in Year 2 our topic is ‘Growing Up’ and we will be learning:

Phonics – We will be continuing phase 5 alternative pronunciations for graphemes, e.g. ea in tea, head and break, ch in chin, chemist, chef. In our GPS lessons we will be learning how to use familiar and new punctuation correctly. We are also practising cursive formation, joining our letters correctly.

English – Monkey See, Monkey Do! Inventing our own version of the story. Instructions – how to write recipe instructions

Maths – Place value

• Read and write numbers to at least 100 in numerals and in words.

• Recognise the place value of each digit in a two digit number (tens, ones) Identify, represent and estimate numbers using different representations including the number line.

• Compare and order numbers from 0 up to 100; use <, > and = signs. • Use place value and number facts to solve problems. • Count in steps of 2, 3 and 5 from 0, and in tens from any number, forward and backward

Addition &Subtraction

• Recall and use addition and subtraction facts to 20 fluently, and derive and use related facts up to 100.

• Add and subtract numbers using concrete objects, pictorial representations, and mentally, including: a two-digit number and ones; a two-digit number and tens; two two-digit numbers; adding three one-digit numbers.

• Show that the addition of two numbers can be done in any order (commutative) and subtraction of one number from another cannot. • Solve problems with addition and subtraction: using concrete objects and pictorial

Science: Animals including humans – Notice that animals, inc humans, have offspring which grow into adults. Find out about and describe the basic needs of animals, inc humans, for survival. Describe the importance for humans to exercise, eating the right amounts of different types of food and hygiene.

Art – Colour chaos – learning about primary and secondary colours

DT – Designing a healthy snack

RE – Creation – Who made the world?

PE – (every Friday afternoon) Games

Welcome back to Summer 2 in Year 1.

This half term in Year 1 our topic is ‘At The Coast’ and we will be learning:

Phonics – We will be continuing phase 5 sounds including introducing alternative pronunciations for graphemes, e.g. ea in tea, head and break, ch in chin, chemist, chef.

English – The Storm Whale – diary writing

Maths – Fractions of shapes, objects and quantities (halves and quarters).

Position and Direction – Describe position, direction and movement, including whole, half, quarter and three quarter turns.

Place Value within 100 – Counting to 100, partitioning numbers, comparing numbers, ordering numbers, one more, one less

Geography: Seas and Coasts – learn about physical, environmental and human features of a seaside location. Compare British beaches to one in another country.

Art – LS Lowry – Seascapes Mixing 5 colours for shade and tone

DT – Designing a healthy seaside picnic

RE – What does it mean to belong? How should we care for the world and for others?

PE – (every Friday afternoon) Sports Day practise, rugby sessions

Year 1 Teaching Trees Trip

Planting Seeds in Year 1

Year 1 Summer 1

Welcome back to Summer 1 in Year 1.

This half term in Year 1 our topic is ‘The Enchanted Woodland’ and we will be learning:

Phonics – revising our new Phase 5 sounds and practising for the Phonics Screening check by reading real and alien words. We will also be learning to add the prefix ‘un’. We will be adding suffixes by using the spelling rule to add -s, -es to words and using –ing, –ed, –er and –est where no change is needed in the spelling of root words [for example, helping, helped, helper, eating, quicker, quickest].

English – Non-fiction – fact files and instructions

Maths – Multiplication and division. We will count in multiples of twos, fives and tens. We will be learning to solve one step problems involving multiplication and division, by calculating the answer using concrete objects, pictorial representations and arrays with the support of the teacher.

Science – Plants and trees. We will be learning to identify and name a variety of common plants and deciduous and evergreen trees. We will discuss what plants and trees need to grow and describe the structure of common flowering plants, including trees.

DT/Art – Observational drawing using different media and materials.

RE – Judaism – Who is Jewish and what do they believe?

PE – (every Friday afternoon)

Dates for diary – Thursday 2nd May is our trip to Ledston Estate to support our topic in Science.
